"The feeling is this is a real trend; the state backing away from its responsibility to take care of its people." — Tompkins County Legislature Chair Martha Robertson, D-Dryden

How typical of "Our Martha," the concept that government is to "take care of" us, like government is the parent and we are small children. As Ronald Reagan said, "Government isn't the solution, it's the problem" and "The nine worst words you can hear: I'm from the government and I'm here to help." One of the most precious rights is the right to be left alone by government. Government officials like Martha are people like us who put on their pants one leg at a time. They have no monopoly on wisdom and we elect them to serve us, not to take care of us. They are us ("We have met the enemy and he is us" Walt Kelly's Pogo Possum).
